Today we defined several rhetorical terms (see "Author's Toolbox"), and then we read Nikki Giovanni's transcript from the convocation at Virginia Tech, which took place on April 17, 2007. Please read over the transcript after reviewing the terms and make a list on Google Docs of which rhetorical devices she used and how. Also, look over the Rhetorical Triangle (Ethos, Logos, Pathos) to determine which one she used in her speech. Here is some background information about her speech:

Background: Uncharacteristically nervous, Nikki Giovanni waited to ascend the stage. The poet, writer,
activist, and Virginia Tech professor is known around the world. She's a popular speaker. But awaiting her
words this time were thousands of grief-dazed students, parents, professors, and other employees. Like her,
they still reeled from the mass shooting on campus the day before that took 33 lives - including that of the
disturbed student shooter - and injured 27 others. Giovanni had written something quickly just hours after the
massacre. She yearned to comfort the campus that she had called home for almost 20 years. But she wasn't at
all confident that she could. After arriving at Cassell Coliseum, she learned that President Bush would be at
the convocation. She borrowed a pen and crossed out a line about the war in Iraq. This wasn't the time or the
place for such commentary. Rereading, she hurriedly added a line to the end to underscore her message and,
ever the writer, to improve the symmetry. […]
When the university's president asked Giovanni to anchor the April 17, 2007, Memorial Convocation, he had
no idea that doing so would complete a tragic circle. She had clashed with the killer more than a year earlier,
raising one of the first red flags about him on campus.
Introduced, she approached the podium, acknowledged Bush, and plunged in…

For today's assignment, watch the Google Meets video first, and then watch the Youtube video. After you have watched the Youtube video, read over the transcript. Find all of the rhetorical devices in the transcript. Using a Google Doc, answer SOAPStone using the information from the speech:

Who is the Speaker?
What is the Occasion?
Who is the Audience?
What is the Purpose?
What is the Subject?
What is the Tone?

WRITE YOUR RESPONSES IN COMPLETE SENTENCES.

***The Youtube video is less than a minute long it is not the entire speech***

For those of you who already completed the assignment before I made edits you are still getting full credit :)
