Algebra 1 Standards - Simplifying Radicals

Standard(s): MGSE9-12.N.RN.2
Rewrite expressions involving radicals and rational exponents using the properties of exponents. (i.e., simplify and/or use the operations of addition, subtraction, and multiplication, with radicals within expressions limited to square roots)

Learning Target: 
I will simplify radicals with and without a calculator.
I will use operations on radicals.
I will solve radical equations.

Success Criteria: 
I can identify radical.
I can recite the factors of common numbers.
I can recall the steps to complete a factor tree.

Daily 10 Warm up

Instructional  Strategies:

• Opening (I do): Recall factors and division rules. Complete notes in  for simplifying radicals.
• Work Session (We do-You do): Complete handout on simplifying radicals.  
• Closing (We check): Check solutions with partners and review any questions students may have as a class.

Differentiation Strategies: Scaffolding throughout lesson and applications will be provided for rigor. Students will work with pairs at some points throughout the assignment.

Formative/Summative Assessment(s) (We check): Ticket out the door.
