Standards Addressed:
MGSE.9-12.G.CO.3 Given a rectangle, parallelogram, trapezoid, or regular polygon, describe the rotations and reflections that carry it onto to itself.
MGSE.9-12.G.CO.5 Given a geometric figure and a rotation, reflection, or translation, draw the transformed figure. Specify a sequence of transformations that will carry a given figure onto another.
Learning Targets/Success Criteria:
--I can describe the lines of symmetry in rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, and regular polygons in terms of rotations and reflections that carry each shaped onto itself.
--I can recognize/identify a line of symmetry.
--I can recognize the number of lines of symmetry in a given figure.
--I can recognize/identify the rotational symmetry of a figure.
--I can specify if/how a figure can be mapped onto itself by identifying lines of symmetry and/or angles of rotation.
Introduction/Connection: None.
Direct Instruction/Guided Practice:
---Review vocabulary: lines of symmetry, rotational symmetry (review degrees of rotations).
--Review polygon vocabulary: pentagon, hexagon, etc.
--Guide students in identifying lines of symmetry and rotational symmetry on w/s attached below.
