Standards Addressed:
MGSE.9-12.G.CO.2 Represent transformations in the plane using transparencies and geometry software; describe transformations as functions that take points in the plane as inputs and give other points as outputs. Compare transformations that preserve distance and angle to those that do not.
MGSE.9-12.G.CO.4 Develop definitions of rotations, reflections and translations in terms of angles, circles, perpendicular lines, parallel lines and line segments.
MGSE.9-12.G.CO.5 Given a geometric figure and a rotation, reflection, or translation, draw the transformed figure using, e.g. graph paper, tracing paper, or geometry software. Specify a sequence of transformations that will carry a given figure onto another.
Learning Targets /Success Criteria:
--I can rotate a figure on the coordinate plane and identify the coordinates of the image.
--I can identify/write the rule for a rotated figure on the coordinate plane.
Review LTs/SCs:
--I can represent transformations visually.
--I can translate a figure on the coordinate plane and identify the coordinates of the image.
--I can identify the rule for a translated figure on the coordinate plane.
--I can write the rule for a translation using arrow notation and displacement.
Introduction/Connection (Activator): ask students to brainstorm what happens to a figure on the coordinate plane when we apply a rotation. Ask students to brainstorm how they can rotate a figure and possible degrees.
Direct instruction/Guided Practice:
--Guide students in completing rotations section of Transformations foldable (attached below).
--Guided practice: selected problems on Rotations w/s (attached below)
