Standards Addressed:
G.GSR.8.3 Write and graph the equation of circles in standard form.
Learning Targets /Success Criteria:
LT: I can identify parts of a circle from the equation written in standard form.
SC:
• I can identify the center of the circle by taking the opposite of h,k.
• I can identify the radius of the circle by taking the square root of the constant.
LT: I can use the graph of a circle to write the equation of the circle.
SC:
• I can find the coordinates of the center.
• I can determine the length of the radius.
• I can use the center and the radius to write the equation in standard form.
LT: I can graph a circle on the coordinate plane.
SC:
• I can identify and plot the center.
• I can identify and use the radius to plot 4 additional points.
Introduction/Connection (Bellringer): Students will complete selected problems on Equations of circles foldable (attached below).
Direct Instruction/Guided Practice:
--review bellringer
--guide students in equations of circles foldable (attached below). Focus on writing equations given the center and radius, the center and a point and the endpoints of a diameter.
Independent Practice/Differentiation/Collaboration:
--differentiation: cloze notes, graphic organizers, foldables (if used), partner work (if used), accelerate/challenge problems for certain learners, additional/guided one on one support for struggling learners
--independent practice: students will complete Graphing and Writing Equations of Circles bellringer (attached below). Students will complete quiz on inscribed angles and equations of circles.
Summarizer/CFU: TOTD
Assignment: Students will complete the following: (both attached below in Notes practice equations of circles)
1) Equations of a circle given the center and a point (Day 2)
2) Equation of a circle given the endpoints of the diameter (Day 3)
