Real World Interaction- Deaf Visitor comes to class
ASL1.INT2 Students will comprehend signed and non-manual markers to understand simple messages in the target language.
ASL1.IP1 Students exchange simple information in the target language, utilizing cultural references where appropriate. Students will: Ask questions and provide responses based suggested topics (e.g., yes/no and wh- questions).
I can introduce myself in ASL.
I can identify the challenges faced by Deaf individuals in the hearing world. I can interact appropriately with a Deaf individual using Deaf-friendly behaviors.
I know I’ve got it when:
I can sign my name to our Deaf guest and he/she understands me.
I can list at least two challenges our Deaf guest experienced in his/her life.
I can use Deaf-friendly manners while our guest is present- remaining silent, using visual cues to get attention, attending to conversations in ASL.
Introduction of Deaf visitor by Mrs. Baker
Students wrote questions to ask visitor on Tuesday in class. Baker typed up questions and printed/cut into strips.
Students will draw two questions from the canister. Baker will call numbers and each student will stand, sign his/her name, and ask his/her question. Baker will interpret (as needed) for beginning signers.
Give Me Five- Tell five things you learned about our guest. Tell me one way we could change our activities when we have another guest in class in the future.
