Standards Addressed:
MGSE.9-12.G.C.1 Understand that all circles are similar.
MGSE.9-12.G.C.2 Identify and describe relationships among inscribed angles, radii, chords, tangents, and secants. Include the relationship between central, inscribed, and circumscribed angles; inscribed angles on a diameter are right angles; the radius of a circle is perpendicular to the tangent where the radius intersects the circle.
Learning Targets /Success Criteria:
--I can identify, describe, and name parts of a circle including: circumference, radius, diameter, chord, secant, and tangent.
Introduction/Connection (Activator): Students will be given “Circle Terms” handout and be asked to match terms and definitions as well as draw examples of the vocabulary.
Direct Instruction/Guided Practice:
--Review activator and discuss unknown terms. Include circumference, circular region, point of tangency.
--Guide students in completing Circle Basics foldable (attached below)
--guided practice on circle vocabulary worksheet
--start tangent theorems (if time) using graphic organizer and foldable (attached below).
Independent Practice/Collaboration/Differentiation:
--differentiation: Graphic organizers, color coding lines/segments, one-on-one assistance for struggling students, accelerated practice for higher performing students.
--Independent practice: Circles Vocabulary worksheet (attached below).
Summarizer TOTD.
