Teacher: Mark Felton
Course/Subject: Honors Algebra 2
Date of Instruction: Friday, April 28th
Standard(s): Solve exponential equations that do not require logarithms (you can make the bases the same and apply the one to one property of exponents)
Write a function defined by an expression in different but equivalent forms to reveal and explain different properties of the function. (MGSE9-12.F.IF.8)
Learning Target:
I can compare linear (horizontal & oblique), quadratic, exponential and cubic functions
I can recall and apply the (many) exponent properties
I can simplify exponential expressions
I can remove fractional exponents from the denominator (warm-up)
Success Criteria:
I recall the qualities associated with linear (horizontal and oblique) functions, quadratic functions, and exponential functions in order to compare them
I can identify the elements of functions and understand hat they perform transformations from a parent graph
I know the parent graphs
Introduction/Opening/Connection: Our new unit is Exponents and Logarithms. There are two memory quizzes, a quiz over applying exponents, an exponential packet that is a quiz grade and a test over exponents & logarithms
Direct Instruction: Notes with examples of each type of problem and comments pertaining to the examples.
Guided Practice: Apply exponential properties (rules)Assignment 1: Apply exponent properties to numerical bases (most will complete in class)
Assignment 2: Apply exponent properties to variable bases (due next Friday)
Independent Practice/Collaborative Practice/Differentiation: Monitoring students throughout lesson as some students will work individually and some will work with partners. Some students will work ahead on additional assignments or enrichment activities. Scaffolding as needed.
Summarizer: We will hand back the Rational Test(from the Friday before Thanksgiving break) at the beginning or end of class.
Assignment: Refer to Google Classroom
What we really did:
1) Several Examples on removing fractional exponents from denominators (so your answers will be correct and completely simplified). (5 minutes)
2)Applying Exponent Rules Quiz (also graded and recorded)
3) Packet Finished page 1 and page 2, On packet we covered writing a percent change as a base (examp: 7%decay = .93, 5%growth=1.05) and worked several exponential word problems which we set up, solved, made a graph on paper and graphed on the calculator (and discussed)
