Standards Addressed:
MGSE.9-12.S.CP.1 Describe categories of events as subsets of a sample space using unions, intersections, or complements of other events (or, and, not).

Learning Targets/Success Criteria:
--I can describe subsets of a sample space in terms of outcomes, unions, intersections and complements.
I can identify outcomes of an event. I can identify the sample space.
I can identify the union of outcomes (one event OR another event).
I can identify the intersection of outcomes (one event AND another event).
I can identify outcomes that are NOT in an event (complement of sets).
I can use Venn diagrams to identify intersection, union and complements of events.

Introduction/Connection: Students will brainstorm different "sets" of things and try to separate that universal set into a Venn Diagram of subsets. Students will be given the parameter that a set cannot contain non-related elements. A Venn Diagram and a universal set box will be given on the board.

Direct Instruction/Guided Practice:
--Guide students in vocabulary of set, element, universal set, empty/null set, complement, union, intersection.
--Guide students in foldable on operations with sets (attached below).

Independent Practice/Collaboration/Differentiation:
--foldables, color coding elements
--pair/share sets. Once taught vocabulary, students will try to identity union, intersection and complements of student sets

Summarizer: students will describe/identify set operations using and, or, not.

Assignment: None.
