Standards Addressed:
MGSE.9-12.G.GMD.1 Give informal arguments for geometric formulas.
a) Give informal arguments for the formulas of the circumference of a circle and the area of a circle using dissection arguments and informal limit arguments.
MGSE.9-12.G.C.5 Derive using similarity the fact that the length of the arc intercepted by an angle is proportional to the radius, and define the radian measure of the angle as the constant of proportionality; derive the formula for the area of a sector.
Learning Targets /Success Criteria:
LT:
--I can find the area and circumference of a circle.
--I can calculate arc length and area of a sector for circles.
SC:
• I can find the circumference of a circle given the radius or diameter.
• I can find the radius or diameter of a circle given the circumference.
• I can find the area of a circle given the radius or diameter.
• I can find the radius of a circle given the area.
• I can identify the angle measure (degrees) for the sector or arc using arc and angle theorems.
• I can use the appropriate formula to solve for arc length or area of the sector given the problem.
• I can solve real world problems involving arc length and area of sectors.
Introduction/Connection (Activator): students will be asked what they remember about area and circumference of a circle.
Direct Instruction/Guided Practice:
--Guide students in completing area/circumference of circles foldable (attached).
--if time, start foldable and graphic organizer on Arc Length and Sector Area (attached below).
Independent Practice/Collaboration/Differentiation:
--differentiation: Graphic organizers, foldables, color coding lines/segments, one-on-one assistance for struggling students, accelerated practice for higher performing students, partner work, student-led teaching/review.
--independent practice: students will complete IXLs listed below and area, circumference and arc length w/s (attached below)
