Standards Addressed:
MGSE.9-12.S.CP.2: Understand that if two events A and B are independent, the probability of A and B occurring together is the product of their probabilities, and that if the probability of two events A and B occurring together is the product of their probabilities, the two events are independent.
MGSE.9-12.S.CP.3: Understand the conditional probability of A given B as P (A and B)/P(B). Interpret independence of A and B in terms of conditional probability; that is, the conditional probability of A given B is the same as the probability of A, and the conditional probability of B given A is the same as the probability of B.
Learning Targets/Success Criteria:
--I can determine whether two events are independent based on their probability.
I can determine if one event affects the probability of another event.
I can find the product of two individual probabilities (independent probability).
Introduction/Connect (Bellringer): students will complete back of Union/Intersection worksheet. Activator for independent/dependent probability: word splash with probability, independent events, dependent events. Students will be asked to give examples/definitions of words.
Direct Instruction/Guided Practice:
--review bellringer and homework
--review activator and guided notes on probability, certain, likely, unlikely, impossible, independent probability, dependent probability
--guided practice using foldable (attached below)
Independent Practice/Collaborative Practice/Differentiation
--differentiation: foldable, manipulatives
--independent practice: bellringer
Summarizer: students will be asked to identify if certain probabilities are independent or dependent.
Assignment: None.
