ASL 1: Pre-Unit: Fingerspelling 101: The Manual Alphabet Names & Fist Letters Up & Down Letters Double Letters & Moving letters J & Z Standards Addressed ASL1.IP1 Students exchange simple information in the target language, utilizing cultural references where appropriate. Students will: A. Produce gestures, handshapes, movements, facial expressions and pantomime. (e.g., marked and unmarked handshapes, emotions). J. Use sequenced information meaningfully (e.g., telling time, days of the week, months, seasons, expressive fingerspelling, numbers 0 -100). ASL1.IP2 Students demonstrate skills necessary to sustain exchanges in the target language. Students will: A. Initiate, participate in, and close a brief exchange (e.g., turn taking and dialogue). Learning Targets: - I can use correct form to fingerspell words with “fist” letters (A, E, O, N, T, S, M). -I can produce the correct form for “up” handshape letters (B, C, D, F, K, L, R, U, V, W, X) in fingerspelled names. - I can use correct form and movement for fingerspelled “down” letters (P, Q, Y) in names and words. -I can use correct technique to fingerspell words with double letters (ex: TT, SS, LL, MM) -I will use correct technique to fingerspell words with the “moving letters” (J, Z) at the beginning, middle, and end. Success Criteria: I know I’ve got it when I can… fingerspell words using correct palm orientation, movement, and techniques and comprehend other people fingerspelling words with these letters also. Activities: Signing Naturally Lessons (Resources: SN Units 1-6 DVD/student textbook/handouts): Introduce manual alphabet, practice fingerspelling words with correct technique View native signers fingerspelling words and develop fluency in spelling words with the specified letter combinations above. Practice fingerspelling through games and small group interactions. Fingerspelling Unit Test this week. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ASL 3- Pre-Unit Review of ASL 1 & 2 Concepts/Vocabulary Georgia Performance Standards ASL2.IP2 Students demonstrate skills necessary to initiate, sustain and close exchanges in the target language. Students will: A. Initiate, participate in, and close an exchange. B. Use simple paraphrasing to convey and comprehend messages (e.g., retelling, and create story from picture stimuli). C. Use non-manual aspects of ASL to convey and comprehend messages (e.g., eye gaze, and role shifting). D. Demonstrate SLPI Survival to Survival+ or ASLPI Level 1.0 to 2.0 Proficiency in target language exchanges. Learning Target(s) related to the standard(s) I can recall the signs and grammatical structures I learned in ASL 1 & 2 and use them correctly in signed conversations. Success Criteria I know I’ve got it when I can use ASL to engage in dialogues that include the following… -TIME + TOPIC + COMMENT structure. -Correct Non-Manual Markers for questions. -Describing present people using correct order of signs -Describe my living situation, family, daily routines, likes/dislikes, and schedule. -LOPA (Location + Object + Person + Action) for commands Activities: Review the following concepts from ASL 1 & 2 (SN Units 1-6): Giving/Following Commands, Category vocabulary, Age Numbers, Opposites, “Have, Like, Want, Need,” Same/Different, family relationships, counting 1-100, chores/duties, cultural behaviors- getting attention and negotiating a signing environment. Engage in classroom dialogues using the above language structures/vocabulary
