ASL 2 (3rd & 4th blocks) Signing Naturally: Unit 4, Lessons 2 & 3 Standards Addressed ASL2.IP1 Students exchange information in the target language, utilizing cultural references where appropriate. Students will: F. Ask questions and provide responses based on topics such as self, others, and immediate environment. ASL2.IP2 Students demonstrate skills necessary to initiate, sustain and close exchanges in the target language. Students will: Initiate, participate in, and close an exchange. C. Use non-manual aspects of ASL to convey and comprehend messages (e.g., eye gaze, and role shifting). D. Demonstrate SLPI Survival to Survival+ or ASLPI Level 1.0 to 2.0 Proficiency in target language exchanges. Learning Targets SN 4.2: I can reply to a yes-no question with a negative statement and/or corrected information. Sn 4.3: I can produce the signed numbers 67-98 using correct technique. Success Criteria I know I’ve got it when I can sign NOT or NONE when answering YES/NO questions with a negative response. I know I’ve got it when I can rock the numbers 67-98 the correct direction depending on their placement in the numbers. Introduction Daily 10: “That Deaf Guy” cartoon. Read/Discuss. Direct Instruction & Guided Practice INTRO TO NEGATION: Practice: responding using no, not I will ask you questions that require a negative response. Practice using either “No” or “Not,” and the remaining info from the question. For example: Question: “YOU OLD 25?” Answer: “NO, ME NOT OLD 25 ME.” Practice using no, none I will ask you questions that require you to answer using “No,” and “none.” For Example: Question: YOU HAVE SISTER DEAF, YOU? Answer: NO, ME NONE DEAF SISTER, ME. Notes on negation: When answering a Yes/No question with a negative response: First sign “NO” Then, follow with a negative statement. Use NONE or NOT- Depends on type of question. If the question is about: Whether something is true or correct, sign “NOT.” Whether you have or don’t have something, sign “NONE.” Remember to shake your head throughout your negative response. PRACTICE: RESPONDING NEGATIVELY TO YES-NO QUESTIONS Signer A: Ask for information Signer B: Reply • Negate statement • Correct information • Do both A: Respond DVD Practice: On your paper, number 1-10. Make two columns. First column, label “NOT.” Second column, label “NONE.” Watch the video and decide whether the signer used “NOT” or “NONE” for each statement. Place a check in the correct column for each. We’ll check answers in class.
