ASL 1: Pre-Unit:
Fingerspelling 101: The Manual Alphabet
Lessons focused on:
- Moving Letter Z (SN 3.4) (Monday)
- Moving Letter J (SN 4.6) (Tuesday)
- Down Letters (SN 3.11) (Wednesday)
- Words with G & H (SN 5.3) (Thursday)
Standards Addressed
ASL1.IP1 Students exchange simple information in the target language,
utilizing cultural references where appropriate.
Students will:
A. Produce gestures, handshapes, movements, facial expressions and
pantomime. (e.g., marked and unmarked handshapes, emotions).
J. Use sequenced information meaningfully (e.g., telling time, days of the
week, months, seasons, expressive fingerspelling, numbers 0 -100).
ASL1.IP2 Students demonstrate skills necessary to sustain exchanges in the
target language. Students will:
A. Initiate, participate in, and close a brief exchange (e.g., turn taking
and dialogue).
Learning Targets:
- I can use correct form to fingerspell words with “fist” letters (A, E, O, N, T, S,
M).
-I can produce the correct form for “up” handshape letters (B, C, D, F, K,
L, R, U, V, W, X) in fingerspelled names.
- I can use correct form and movement for fingerspelled “down” letters (P,
Q, Y) in names and words.
-I can use correct technique to fingerspell words with double letters (ex: TT,
SS, LL, MM)
-I will use correct technique to fingerspell words with the “moving letters”
(J, Z) at the beginning, middle, and end.
Success Criteria: I know I’ve got it when I can…
fingerspell words using correct palm orientation, movement, and techniques and comprehend other people fingerspelling words with these letters also.
Activities: Signing Naturally Lessons (Resources: SN Units 1-6 DVD/student textbook/handouts):
Introduce manual alphabet, practice fingerspelling words with correct technique
View native signers fingerspelling words and develop fluency in spelling words with the specified letter combinations above.
Practice fingerspelling through games and small group interactions.
Fingerspelling Unit quiz on Friday.
