AA.DSR.2.1: Recognize the purposes of and differences among sample surveys, experiments, and observational studies; explain how randomization relates to each. Distinguish between primary and secondary data and how it affects the types of conclusions that can be drawn. AA.DSR.2.2: When collecting and considering data, critically evaluate ethics, privacy, potential bias, and confounding variables along with their implications for interpretation in answering a statistical investigative question. Implement strategies for organizing and preparing big data sets. AA.DSR.2.3: Distinguish between population distributions, sample data distributions, and sampling distributions. Use sample statistics to make inferences about population parameters based on a random sample from that population and to communicate conclusions using appropriate statistical language.

LT:

  • I can differentiate between populations and samples

  • I can determine if data is a parameter or a statistic

  • I understand the different types of sample

  • I can identify types of studies and data collection methods

  • I can categorize types of data

  • I can identify sources of bias

  • I can determine if a system of data collection is ethical and if it protects subject privacy

  • I can determine if a data source is primary or secondary

 SC:

  • I know that samples are subsets of the population

  • I know that parameters describe populations

  • I know that statistics describe samples

  • I know the difference between random, stratified, cluster, convenience and systematic samples

  • I know the difference between an observational study and an experiment

  • I can describe the characteristics of a simulation, a census and a survey

  • I can describe the difference between quantitative and qualitative data

  • I can define bias and identify sources of bias in a data collection method

  • I know that primary data sources are collected directly by the researcher

  • I can describe the characteristics of a ethical and private data collection method

  • I can identify the characteristics of an informed consent policy

Lesson/Activity:

Engage: WODB

Explore: Notes and examples of vocabulary terms related to data collection and design

Apply: Student work and embedded questions in guided notes

Reflect: Week 1 Review

Resources: Worksheet
