Standard Addressed: Students in Tools for College cover the College Board mandated standards/skills for their AP courses. Each student works on different standards/skills depending on their individual needs in their AP coursework.
Learning Target:The learning objectives that will be covered in each lesson are clearly labeled in each student’s AP course syllabus. Each student is asked what formula, concept, main idea or information do you need to use in order to successfully complete your AP assignments.
Success Criteria: Students are able to complete each assignment with a 70% or better to make continuous progress in completing the coursework with the goal of learning the content and skills necessary to be successful in college-level coursework.
Introduction/Connection: Teachers will ask what AP assessments or performance tasks are upcoming and will review deadlines/goals for AP students. Teachers will review study tools, habits, and expectations
Direct Instruction: The College Board AP platform and the Albert program provide a direct instructional component for every lesson. Each AP teacher also organizes a GoogleClassroom with videos, content, and review materials. Students will work individually or in groups to review the concepts that they will be covering. Depending on the course, an AP virtual platform may provide reading passages that the student must read. Furthermore, there are embedded questions in every instructional component to check for comprehension. Students may also notes highlighting the most important concepts covered in each lesson.
Guided Practice: The AP online platforms provide interactive instructions that covers the standards/skills. Each instruction includes practice questions that checks for student mastery. In addition to the Edgenuity program, the teacher provides feedback regarding content covered; and may reteach content to student using source material outside Edgenuity as needed to reinforce understanding of the standard. The teacher will also group students in the same courses so that students may practice and check each other’s understanding of content and course material.
Independent/Collaborative Practice/Differentiation:Student must complete an array of activities in each class period. These include vocabulary terms, practice questions, essays, projects, etc. If student does not master his assignments, he may be required to do it over during the Tools for College class. The Tools for College teacher or AP teacher will provide feedback regarding the submitted assignments and work with the student to address any difficulties the student may be experiencing in completing the task assigned.
Assessment Uses/Strategies:Tools for College teachers will encourage students to check their grades in IC and monitor their performance on classroom assessments. After each assessment, students will complete any needed review on one of the AP platforms in order to relearn necessary content and prepare for AP testing and future assessment/college coursework. Teachers will also monitor class participation and students will receive a point per day for Tools for College participation. Weekly participation (review, remediation, class discussion) will be entered into IC on Fridays.
Summarizer/Check for Understanding: In the classroom, the teacher will review upcoming deadlines for AP courses. At this point, the teacher may ask questions to determine comprehension of material. If teacher determines that further reinforcement or redelivery of material is needed, the teacher will organize or facilitate additional review during the next Tools for College class period or will provide feedback to AP teacher of record.
College and Career Readiness: The Tools for College Class contains opportunities to reinforce college and career ready skills, including problem solving, critical thinking, collaboration, study habits, reading, and writing, in every subject. Students are expected to demonstrate these skills in the Tools for College class using their AP coursework from their AP classes.
