Glynn County to send 14 to Traditional Wrestling State Championships

Fourteen wrestlers from Glynn County will travel to Macon this weekend for a shot at capturing the GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championship.

Nine wrestlers from Glynn Academy, and four from Brunswick High, placed among the top six of their respective weight classes at the Class 6A Section B held Saturday at Brunswick Square Garden to book a ticket to the state championships, including a quartet of division winners.

Brunswick senior Anthony Lowe remained undefeated in his quest for a second straight state championship, taking first place in the 190-pound weight class with a pinfall victory of North Forsyth junior Colin Kelley in the title match.

In addition to Lowe, Glynn Academy senior Hunter Kegley scored a first-place finish at Brunswick Square Garden with a 5-0 decision over South Effingham senior Jacob Stellhorn in the 126-pound division, and Glynn junior Aiden Waters also took first in the 144-pound division by edging out a 6-4 decision over Brunswick senior Thomas Clay, who finished second.

A day earlier, Glynn Academy sophomore Marigona Lau won the 125-pound weight class of the Girls Section 2 at Harris County High School in Hamilton as she seeks to become the county’s first female state champion. Lau rolled through the competition, capping off the day with a technical fall victory of 17-1 over Pepperell junior Brooklyn Duck.

Back in Brunswick, the Pirates also saw junior Clayton Hicks (120) and senior River Creel (285) place second at sectionals while the Terrors got runner-up finishes from junior Phil Cuttino (138) and senior Cade Morgan (157).

Junior Liam Bee (106), junior Harbin Bruce (120) and senior Ryan Alfau (132) notched third-place finishes for Glynn Academy, and sophomore Adam Mills (150) and junior Bennett Sams (190) each finished fourth. Terrors senior Quay Evans also qualified for state with a sixth-place finish at 285.

The GHSA Traditional Wrestling State Championships are scheduled to begin Thursday, when the first round and quarterfinals are set to take place. Wrestlebacks begin Friday with the semifinals to follow, and the medal rounds will be held Saturday.
