Teacher : Holly Carter

Course/ Subject: Pre-Calculus - Solving Word Problems with Matrices

Date of Instruction:  1/12/22

Opening (I Do)

An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

TKES 1, 2, 3,4,5, 8,10

Standards:

MGSE9-12.N.VM.6

MGSE9-12.N.VM.7

MGSE9-12.N.VM.8

MGSE9-12.N.VM.9

MGSE9-12.N.VM.10

Learning Target:

I can solve word problems using a matrix equation.

Success Criteria:

  • I can state the variables of a word problem.

  • I can write a system of equations from a word problem.

  • I can create a matrix equation from a system of equations.

  • I can solve a matrix equation.

Introduction/Connection:

Do now  -SAT/ACT Practice- students will answer multiple choice questions written in the SAT or ACT style – posted in Google Classroom

DIRECT INSTRUCTION:

Solving Systems Word Problems PowerPoint – located in Google Classroom

We will read several word problems and walk through the process of setting up a matrix equation and solving it.  We will discuss different methods to solve and applications to the SAT/ACT

Work Period  (We Do, You Do)

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

TKES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. 8,10

GUIDED PRACTICE:

Systems of Equations Word Problems – Smartboard

Students will use the problems on the back of the systems of equations worksheet to practice creating matrix equations.  We will use the graphing calculators to solve the problems.

INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:

Students will independently complete “Systems of Equations (word problems)” worksheet located on Google Classroom and report answers by taking a picture and posting to Google Classroom

Students will be given a review for the matrices test that will be given on August 19.

Closing  (We Check)

Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding .

TKES : 1,2,3, 4,5,6,7,8

SUMMARIZE/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:

Students will create a word problem that will require a system of equations to solve.  They will then solve the equation using a matrix equation.
