Course/ Subject: Pre-Calculus – Simplifying Trig Expressions

Date of Instruction:  2/14/22

Opening (I Do)

An engaging process for lesson introduction that is specifically planned to encourage equitable and purposeful student participation. Describe the instructional process that will be used to introduce the lesson.

TKES 1, 2, 3,4,5, 8,10

Standards:

MGSE9-12.F.TF.8

MGSE9-12.F.TF.9

 Learning Target:

I can use one trigonometric function to find the value of the remaining trig functions by using the trigonometric identities.

I can simplify trigonometric expressions.

Success Criteria:

I can identify the quadrant where the terminal side of the angle lies.

I can use the Pythagorean Identities to find another identity.

I can substitute one trig function for its equivalent function.

Introduction/Connection:

Do now  -SAT/ACT Practice- students will answer multiple choice questions written in the SAT or ACT style – posted in Google Classroom

We will connect the Pythagorean Theorem to the identities.

DIRECT INSTRUCTION:

I will introduce the trigonometric identities.  I will demonstrate how to use the identities simplify a trig expression.

Work Period  (We Do, You Do)

Students learning by doing/demonstrating learning expectations.  Describe the instructional process that will be used to engage the students in the work period.

TKES 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7. 8,10

GUIDED PRACTICE:

We will work practice problems together and discuss the steps needed to simplify an expression. We will use a multiple choice activity to check our understanding.

INDEPENDENT/COLLABORATIVE PRACTICE/DIFFERENTIATION:

Students will practice by completing Orange Book p 381 19-39 odd.

Closing  (We Check)

Describe the instructional process that will be used to close the lesson and check for student understanding.

TKES : 1,2,3, 4,5,6,7,8

SUMMARIZE/CHECK FOR UNDERSTANDING:

We will check our example problems to verify understanding.
