Signing Naturally: Unit 5: Talking About Everyday Activities

Lesson 1: Talking About Everyday Activities

Interpersonal Mode of Communication (IP) 

ASL2.IP1 Students exchange information in the target language, utilizing cultural references where appropriate. Students will:


G. Ask questions and provide responses about plans and events (e.g., time markers, listing, and sequencing). 


ASL2.IP2 Students demonstrate skills necessary to initiate, sustain and close exchanges in the target language. Students will: 

A. Initiate, participate in, and close an exchange. 

B. Use simple paraphrasing to convey and comprehend messages (e.g., retelling, and create story from picture stimuli). 

C. Use non-manual aspects of ASL to convey and comprehend messages (e.g., eye gaze, and role shifting). 

D. Demonstrate SLPI Survival to Survival+ or ASLPI Level 1.0 to 2.0 Proficiency in target language exchanges. 

  • I will use the calendar to identify today, yesterday, and tomorrow. 

  • I will demonstrate signs for everyday activities.

  • I will use word order to establish tense.

  • I will practice using WHEN questions and answering with calendar time signs. 

  • I will practice asking (2h)#DO++ questions and word order with time signs.

  • DAILY 10: Review 3:15- Asking What Is The Sign

  • Review of five strategies to ask for an unknown/forgotten sign:

Point to object, draw, list category items, use opposites, describe/act out

  • Watch video and determine which strategy is used for each mini-dialogue.

Introduce calendar time signs- today, yesterday, tomorrow, days of week


Introduce: Everyday Activities VOCABULARY SIGNS (m152-153): 

GO-TO, LEAVE-FOR, STAY+HOME, IN-PAST + (day), FUTURE (day), days of week, house-clean, cook, play game, watch movie/TV, cook, work, school, library, study, gym, exercise, fs-park, practice soccer (other sports), church, meeting, hospital, see doctor, #bank, withdraw money, restaurant, meet friend, food+store, shopping, when, (2h)#DO++, place


Practice: Establishing Tense- Use word order to establish tense: WHEN + WHO + DID WHAT (activity)


Discussion of Tenses (using timeline diagram)

Notes: WH-question- What a Person did/will do

To ask a “what one did/will do” question:

1. Name the day

  • Raise eyebrows

2. Ask what person did/will do

  • Lower brows

  • Lean head forward

  • Hold last sign (the WH-question)


Whole Group Practice: My Week 1- Practice asking WHEN questions and answering with calendar time signs. 


Exercise 5:1- Lisa’s week (student workbook p. 389)

Students work in pairs taking turns asking about Lisa’s schedule. Teacher monitors/gives feedback on non-manual markers.


Wrap-up: Review vocabulary introduced


  • Daily 10 sheets (collected/graded on Fridays)

  • Teacher observations/feedback

Follow IEP accommodations as specified. Individualized support for all signers. Pair stronger signers with struggling signers to provide language models/assistance.
